Linocut Workshop 31st May at Cork Volunteer Centre

If you never did this before, probably you would ask yourself what is it?

A linocut workshop is a creative session where participants learn and practice the art of linoleum block printing and of course have fun. We had such workshop in Cork Volunteer Centre, this workshop is guided by an artist Viktoria who specialize in printmaking.

Here’s some tips what you might expect in a linocut workshop:

  1. Introduction to Linocut: The workshop usually begins with an introduction to linocut printing. Participants learn about the history of linocut, its techniques, and its applications in art.

2. Materials and Tools: Attendees are familiarized with the materials and tools used in linocut printing. This includes linoleum blocks (which are used as the printing surface), carving tools (such as gouges and knives), inks, brayers (rollers for spreading ink), paper, and printing presses (if available).
3. Design and Planning: Participants are guided through the process of designing their prints. This involves sketching their ideas on paper, considering composition, negative space, and the properties of linocut that affect the final print.
4. Carving Techniques: The core of the workshop focuses on carving the linoleum block. Instructors demonstrate various carving techniques, including how to create different textures and depths to achieve desired effects in the print.

5. Inking and Printing: Once the block is carved, participants learn how to apply ink evenly onto the block using a brayer. Techniques for achieving different ink effects (like gradients or solid colors) are demonstrated. Then, attendees learn how to properly transfer the inked design onto paper using a printing press or by hand rubbing (if a press is not available).

We are waiting for you next time!
